Societies are characterised by social inequalities. Pronounced inequalities harbour social conflicts that can be institutionalised, suppressed or carried out violently - and which in turn can reduce existing inequalities or create new ones.
Building on Bielefeld University's interdisciplinary DNA, the Conflicts of Inequality (CoIn) focus area approaches these complex interactions with an innovative, context-sensitive and holistic framework. By integrating empirical and data-innovative methods, our approach promises new insights into changing and increasingly digitalised societies - and thus strengthens Bielefeld's unique research profile.
Societies are characterised by social inequality and social conflicts. Conflicts of Inequality (CoIn) aims to explore the complex mechanisms and moderators that link inequalities and conflicts - with an empirical, data-innovative and context-sensitive approach that also focusses on social relevance and knowledge transfer. CoIn combines perspectives from sociology, public health, psychology, economics, history and Data Science and builds on the SOEP-RegioHub as well as other successful networks and institutes in Bielefeld (IKG, FGZ-RISC, ConflictA, CeUS). Our innovative and interdisciplinary approach is pioneering in the international research landscape and supports the University's goal of establishing an independent and future-orientated profile.
